A Work Permit is an official document issued by the Director of Immigration Services in Kenya, as stipulated in section 40 of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011. This document allows foreign nationals to enter Kenya and engage in various activities, including:

- Farming
- Business
- Professional employment
- Missionary activities
- Residence in Kenya
The issuance of Work and Residence permits is based on recommendations from the Permit Determination Committee. This inter-ministerial committee is appointed by the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, as per section 40(1) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011.
It's important to note that applicants have the right to appeal decisions regarding work permit and residence permit applications. If a person is dissatisfied with the Director's decision, they can appeal to the Cabinet Secretary for a review, as outlined in section 22(1) of the Kenya Citizens and Foreign Nationals Management Service Act, 2011.
Various classes of permits are available, as specified in Section 36(1) and the seventh schedule of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations, 2012. These different permit classes cater to the diverse needs of foreign nationals seeking to enter and work in Kenya.
