The Refugee Act of 2006

The Refugee Act of 2006 in Kenya is legislation that was enacted to provide for the recognition, protection, and management of refugees within the country. It outlines the definition of a refugee, the process for applying for refugee status, and the rights and obligations of refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya.

The Act also establishes the administrative institutions responsible for managing refugee affairs, such as the Department of Refugee Services and the Commissioner for Refugee Affairs.

The Act gives effect to international conventions on refugees, including the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, and the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa.
