Internship and Research Pass

Kenya Internship/Research Pass is a specific type of visa granted to a person seeking to enter or remain in Kenya for the purposes of an internship or academic research within the country.

This pass is typically issued for a specific duration and requires applicants to meet certain eligibility criteria.

• The person seeking to enter into or remain in Kenya has been accepted as a researcher or intern in an institution within Kenya, or
• The intern or researcher shall remain in Kenya for a period not exceeding twelve months.

NOTE: It is important to note that the Kenya Internship/Research Pass is distinct from other types of visas such as tourist visas or work permits. It specifically caters to individuals who intend to engage in internship programs or research activities within the country.

When applying for an Internship or Research Pass in Kenya, here are the requirements you'll need to fulfill:

• Duly Filled Application Form 30 : To apply, complete, sign, and stamp Application Form 30. This form must be filled out by the institution's authorized personnel for new and renewal cases. The form can be printed at the end of the application process.
• Detailed and Signed Cover Letter : The institution should send a detailed, signed cover letter to the Director of Immigration Services. The letter should specify the internship or research topic and the program's duration.
• Copy of Valid National Passport: A copy of the bio-data page of a valid national passport.
• Current Immigration Status :The current immigration status of the pupil/student if they are in the country.
• Two Recent Passport-Size Colored Photos : Two recent passport-sized color photos.
• Academic Certificates and CV : Duly certified copies of your academic certificates and CV.
• Copy of the Research License : A copy of the research license from the National Commission For Science, Technology & Innovation (NACOSTI) is required for those who are undertaking research programs.
• For minors, please attach a copy of the parent's Kenya residence permit if they are not a boarder.
• Police Clearance Certificate : A Police Clearance Certificate is required from the country of origin. Kenyan residents can obtain it from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

NOTE : Documents in foreign languages should be translated into English by either the embassy, a public notary, or an authorized and recognized institution.

To ensure a smooth application process, submit the application for the internship, research, or study program 3 months in advance of the intended start date. This timeline allows time for review and processing.

After successfully submitting your online application, it is necessary to present printed copies of the application documents at either the Immigration headquarters or the Kenyan mission abroad.

The processing time for internship/research pass applications can vary but generally takes several weeks. 

2. Fees

• Non-East Africans - Kshs. 15,000 per year. 
• East Africa Community Member States - Gratis (No Charge).

Interns or researchers can stay in Kenya for up to 12 months, with the option to extend annually.

2. Pass Duration: Your pass is valid for the duration specified. Overstaying may result in penalties or deportation.
3. Employment Restrictions: As an intern or researcher, you cannot take up regular employment or work for profit beyond the scope of your internship or research.
4. Compliance with Laws: You must adhere to Kenyan laws and regulations during your stay.
5. Reporting Changes: If there are any changes (such as address, institution, or research topic), report them promptly to the immigration authorities.
